Forest for fashion, fashion for forest

21marzoOn March 21st, the first Spring Day and the International Day of Forest, the United Nations in Geneva have hosted the event: Fashion for forest – Forest for fashion. The message is simple and immediate: with our choices, even on how to dress, we can make a difference and choose sustainable paths.

Sustainable developments is high on United Nations agenda, but unfortunately, still a low priority in people’s lives, often the lack of knowledge and communication lead to forget this fundamental aspect for the planet preservation. Communication and information in this area are the main challenges that brought the Italian Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the Swiss Governament and other associations to join forces with UNECE-FAO and Timber Section to organize this important event and sensibilise people.

There is a need for sustainable development to permeate people’s lives and for business to understand, embrace and support the transition towards what is often referred to as “the green economy”, a system where improved human well-being are satisfied while respecting and even enhancing the planet natural capital. These are the reasons for this event: a panel of experts to talk and discuss this topic, a fashion show by young designers that already work using materials that respect nature.

The interventions from Istitutions as well as from people working in the fashion area have been many: Mario Boselli, Presidente of Camera italiana della moda, Michelangelo Pistoletto, a well known Italian designer, the Italian Ambassador Maurizio Serra and many others. All have put the accent on the necessity to be cautious and clear about the responsibility we have towards our planet. Michelangelo Pistoletto developped the symbol of the alliance between nature and technology: “third heaven”.

The exhibition will continue until April 17th in the “Pas Perdus” room at United Nations in Geneva.
